MGM Advantage's latest Retirement Nation Report shows that only five per cent, 299,000, of people yet to retire aged 55 and over feel fully prepared for retirement.
In 2008 some 39 per cent felt fully financially prepared for leaving work, but only 15 per cent have actually sought financial advice about the issue.
A director at MGM Advantage, Craig Fazzini-Jones, expressed concern about the situation and said: "This lack of financial planning means that more people will have to work longer to ensure that they have an adequate income in retirement."
